A tribute to Portuguese director Noémia Delgado (1933-2016), connected to the Portuguese Cinema Novo (New Cinema) generation and author of this pioneering ethnographic documentary about traditional caretos of Trás-os-Montes, in the Northeast province of Portugal.

Noémia Delgado filmed "Masks" from Christmas 1974 to Ash Wednesday 1975, in Varge, Grijó da Parada, Bemposta, Pondence, Rio de Onor e Bragança. Focusing on traditional caretos of Trás-os-Montes, the film records the secular rituals from "Winter Cycle", associated with the solstice and the initiation into adulthood. Noémia Delgado has done much for the recovery and revitalization of these traditions, when registering a set of traditions that were loosing the meaning and accuracy in the representation, and even reenacting some of them.
